EA actually took this approach with other games like NBA Street, SSX, and Def Jam Vendetta. This lasted for three years and culminated with NBA Live 2005 which featured one of the poster boys for this era Carmelo Anthony. They also introduced freestyle controls that reflected the And 1 craze that swept the country and made playground stars celebrities. They hired DJ Clue and bundled a mixtape with that year’s game. Hip Hop and the NBA were becoming symbiotic and EA knew it. That game perfectly fused semi arcade gameplay with what was to become the culture of the NBA for the next decade. In fact, it wasn’t till NBA Live 2003 that the game caught the attention of mainstream media.

It wasn’t until the PS2/Xbox era that NBA Live became the game that was namedropped by ballers and MC’s. It was literally just EA’s basketball option in the PlayStation/N64 era.

Early games in the franchise weren’t as revered as say its football stablemate Madden. To understand this mentality, we have to go back to the good ol days when NBA Live had the lead.Ī lot of folks think NBA Live gained success from its gameplay but that’s far from the truth. Just rebuilding something with absolutely no foundation. Never gaining momentum or compounding key features. Now, NBA Live might not of had the game tied in quite some time but whenever ground is gained, EA negates it by removing features or the game itself. When the lead grows too strong you pull him from the bench to help get the lead back only to pull him again when the game tied. On your roster you have an amazing player one of the best in the world and every time you take the lead, you pull him out the game because you enjoy playing from behind. Imagine yourself coaching a basketball game against the toughest opponent you’ve ever faced. Happened to NBA Live? How did one of the games that helped bridge the culture of the NBA with gaming fall like it got hit by Deontay Wilder? How is it that after one of its best showings in NBA Live 2019 there is no release this year? Why does it seem like EA has zero commitment to this franchise and is it possible that after all the bullshit of this past decade it can make a return to grace next generation? You know NBA 2K20, the gold digging, unfinished, pocket watching, no good, cross eyed, mutha… #FireRonnie2K! What happened to competition on the market? What. I’m a lifelong videogame and NBA fan and I literally have no choice but to play NBA 2K20.
